Walking through a quiet forest, trees appear as isolated individual organisms competing for sunlight. Through these hyphal highways, trees exchange bidirectional resources: mature canopy trees shuttle photosynthesized carbon and sugars to shaded younger saplings, while receiving water, nitrogen, and phosphorus mobilized by the fungus. When a tree is attacked by pests, it can transmit volatile and biochemical warning signals through the fungal network, prompting neighboring trees to synthesize defensive tannins before the infestation arrives.
