My Friend Regrets His Biotechnology Degree

My Friend Regrets His Biotechnology Degree What Should He Do?

One of my friends has just graduated in Biotechnology.

Now, he regrets the choice of course.

He must start earning money soon but is confused about what to do next job, more studies, or a complete career change.

I have my ideas but I would like to hear yours.

If you were him, what would you do next?

Take any job to begin earning?

Upskill in biotechnology related domains such as clinical research or bioinformatics?

Change careers entirely?

Provide your guidance it could assist more graduates who feel trapped after getting the "wrong” degree.

Rather than switching to a completely different field, I think it’s better to focus on specific domains within biotechnology, such as regulatory affairs, clinical trials, bioinformatics, or data analysis. These areas can be more effective in building a career and also offer good growth opportunities. If the main goal is to start earning quickly while still staying connected to the degree, these paths are definitely worth considering.
Honestly, I didn’t know much about these options at the right time, so I directly opted for my master’s degree. Now, I am waiting for an entry-level role in the regulatory sector. So, my advice would be to carefully explore such domains before making a complete career change, it can save time and open doors to stable opportunities.

Every degree gives you skills to build on. Short-term courses like clinical research, bioinformatics etc. help you get better opportunities.

Biotechnology is a great program to do but because it doesn’t have that much scope in India , that is the main reason people in India regret their biotechnology degree

That’s tough regrets around career choices are more common than we might think. A biotech degree opens so many doors from drug development to research and beyond but if there’s a mismatch between expectations and reality, it can lead to real frustration.

What might help is exploring adjacent roles like pharmacogenomics, regulatory affairs, or clinical research. Sometimes a small pivot, rather than a full switch, brings back meaning and satisfaction. If your friend wants to chat through potential paths, it might spark new opportunities.

If I were him, I’d first take a job to start earning and get work experience. At the same time, I’d explore short courses in areas like clinical research, bioinformatics, or pharma to see what matches my interest. If nothing feels right, then I’d consider a career change. This way, income doesn’t stop and options stay open.

If I were him, considering the urgency to make money, I would first leave the idea of research behind and prepare myself for a biotech career outside of academia. And second, with current trends, I would focus on developing an understanding of artificial intelligence and machine learning in biotechnology, leaning towards a domain that integrates computers and biology, hope this helps in some way!

Instead focusing on the core , he can try to implement biotech techniques in other field. Like, clinical trials, medical writing, clinical data management. There are lots of options, he just have to explore the right path. There’s nothing to worry and feel bad. Firstly remove that thought from you, Biotechnology is one of the fastest growing sector, more than it, its serving humanities and society. Image life without all these researches, It’s hard, right? So, be proud and step in a wise career.

I’d recommend gaining experience through entry-level job while taking time to learn in demand skills like bioinformatics or clinical research. This way he gains experience, financial independence, and keeps doors open for better biotech careers.

I’ve seen many people in dilemma about choosing biotechnology and regretting it later on, but unlike IT market biotech is a bit stable even though on the lower end of the payscale. QA, QC, clinical trials, diagnostics etc are some jobs he can look into.
