My Experience at a Health and Wellness Centre (HWC)

Recently, I had the opportunity to visit a rural healthcare setup as part of a field visit. During this visit, I explored a Health and Wellness Centre (HWC) – a crucial part of India’s Ayushman Bharat initiative aimed at strengthening primary healthcare delivery, especially in underserved areas.

For those unfamiliar, HWCs are upgraded Sub-Health Centres or Primary Health Centres that provide comprehensive primary healthcare services. Services are offered free of cost, bridging gaps in accessibility and affordability for rural populations.

What struck me the most was the enthusiasm and dedication of the Community Health Officers (CHOs) and ASHA workers. The environment was clean, organized, and efficient. Despite being in a resource-constrained setting, they ensured timely attendance, maintained hygiene, and conducted systematic health check-ups for every individual who walked in.

In conversation with them, one of the CHOs said something that has stayed with me: “Paisa bhale hi kam milta hai, par man ki shanti zarur milti hai”
(We may not earn much money, but we surely find peace of mind in this work)

That simple yet profound statement deeply moved me. It reflected the selfless spirit and purpose that drives these frontline workers. Their commitment to community health, even in the face of challenges, is truly inspiring and deserves recognition
