Recently, many health related issues are expanding in India and worldwide. The most listed lifestyle diseases such as Obesity, hypertension, diabetes mellitus are rapidly increasing in all population. These are been contributed by consuming ultra-processed food (UPFâs). UPFâs are high in sugar, carbohydrates, hydrogenated oil, fructose along with additives such as artificial colors, flavorsâ and preservatives.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India(FSSAI) has issued warning to Food Business Operators(FBO) for misleading customers with false claim with brand names, trade names and labelling violations.
False health informationâs such as:
- No added sugars â Especially in soft drinks and fruit milk shakes that actually been extracted from pulp of the fruit
- ââNaturally occurring sugarsââ
- ââ100% vegââ
- Prohibited therapeutic claims such as ââAnti-cancerous propertyââ
- ââRich in milk solidsââ
- ââGood fats balanceââ
- ââHeart proââ
- ââGluten freeââ
- ââWhole grain goodnessââ
CONCLUSION:
- Food regulatory bodies should ensure and monitor the food industry operators are actually following strict protocols in marketing.
- Proper labelling of nutritional facts
- Maintain transparency to consumers.
