MINUTES MATTER IN MEDICINE

There are more than 86000 seconds per day. And for a medico on duty, each second is important. No doubt, time is money for all. But for a health-care professional, I wouldn’t be wrong if I say every second, every minute matters.

Minutes and Emergencies:
For a doctor or nurse or staff working in a casualty unit, the minute a patient enters the hospital to the minute the first treatment modality is administered, seconds even milli-seconds can make a difference. Myocardial infarctions, strokes, epilepsy attacks, status asthamaticus, multiple organ failures all of these cases race against time. Striking the disease with proper diagnosis and treatment on perfect timing is so important here.

The role of time in a daily OPD practice:
Doctors not only ask what are the symptoms to a patient but also how long have they been complaining of it. Duration and order of symptoms help decide the chronicity and ultimately help in the diagnosis. Also, factoring time to judge how long to give the treatment, how many times a medicine should be repeated per day, at what times should a patient take the medicine is significant. Even Ayurveda emphasizes the role of time in every possible aspect from health to disease.

A few minutes-minute break:
Continuous work, physical and mental stress in taking care of others health, takes a toll on the health of a medico. Amidst, tight schedules, a few minutes in quiet and peace can help recharge the racing mind of a medico.

So, time definitely is a factor that cannot be ignored by medical and health-care professionals.

Kindly share how important is time in pharmacy, dentistry and all health care fields.

Yes even small delays can affect diagnosis, treatment outcomes, and patient safety. Right dose, right procedure, and right care must happen at the right time. In healthcare, timing is not just management — it can directly impact a patient’s life.
