While healthcare students are trained to care for others, their own mental well-being often goes unnoticed. Long study hours, academic pressure, competitive environments, and high expectations can quietly take a toll on mental health. Stress, burnout, anxiety, and self-doubt are more common than we talk about-but rarely addressed openly.
Acknowledging mental health as a priority is not a weakness; it is a necessity. Simple steps like maintaining work–life balance, seeking peer support, practicing mindfulness, and reaching out for professional help can make a significant difference. Educational institutions also play a crucial role by creating safe spaces, encouraging conversations, and providing counseling resources.
A healthy mind is the foundation of a compassionate and effective healthcare professional. Caring for yourself is the first step toward caring for others.
Mental health matters-especially for those who heal the world.
Recently a government medical college in Kerala started a refreshment room consisting of snacks, game area, living room with tv and a small yoga room for its doctors and students. Such initiative would be good up to an extend for some healthcare workers along with proper job distribution and reducing the work load by increasing the man power.
Institutions can firstly stop their overpromising results in billboards or advertisements, which cause a lot of hustle & mental pressure among the students. They should emphasize more recreative activities for students. The institution can hold a special session for counselling on mental health and overall problems faced by students. Also, always studying is not necessary; sometimes taking a break from all daily studies is all that is required.
Indeed! A healthy mind can be the foundation for an effective healthcare professional. In today’s time mental health is one of the most debatable topic. Not only does it impact the well-being of the individual but also the work they commit to. For a healthcare professional, who is constantly entangled between opds, studies, research checking up on them for their mental health should be priority.
Every educational institution should have a qualified mental health professional/ counselor who can equip the students to handle stress / mental health better. Ensuring a positive learning environment , stopping the over-glorification of burning oneself out and removing the stigma around mental health are also very important.
