Medical Quiz - The MBBS Memory Booster

Everyone in medical college knows that studying different subjects is hard. The recall- harder.

You may remember reading 2-3 topics of pathology, remembering 4-5 drugs of pharmacology on a day , only to forget more than half, 3-4 days later.

Like the muscles need exercise everyday for the body to be fit, the brain also needs exercise to utilise the information fed into it.

Quizzes are one of the effective ways of recalling the information , the facts and all the formulae.

Some medical colleges hold interdepartmental and intercollegiate quiz contests. These are a great way for the students to learn medicine. To study for any quiz, a student has to go through all the lines of the book, collect extra information, either from other books or online. Find out the actual ‘ why’ rather than accepting facts as they are. They are also made to join the dots as all the answers are not directly available. There are tricky case studies involving different medical specialties. The student gets a good grasp of the medical condition, by knowing the pathology, pharmacology, surgical management etc. They also help to prepare the student well for competitive exams.

Did you participate in any quizzes? How was your experience?

Quiz is a fun way of revision of medical studies. I have participated in many quiz and felt remembering few things. Quiz competition makes us want to study more to get the correct answer.

Quizzes are one of the best memory boosters because they use active recall. Testing yourself after 1 day, 3 days, 7 days, and 30 days (spaced repetition) is one of the most effective ways to retain medical knowledge long term.
