MAINTAINING IMMUNITY: An ayurvedic approach

It’s been more than 5 years since the infamous pandemic and lockdown. Everything related to the disease and how to treat it was haywire. One thing though was constant- the talks on immunity and how to improve it. It still is one of the hot topics of discussion in the medical and health care sector.

What is immunity?

Immunity, as we all know, is our body’s defence force, our body’s army. Lymphocytes, antibodies, lymph glands and a ton of more factors contribute to a good immune system. Immunity is not dependent on one factor but many.

Similarly, in Ayurveda, immunity a.k.a vyaadhikshamatva is a complex entity, contributed by many factors. Some of these major factors are body’s strength, digestive fire, ojas or the vital factor and a balanced state of all the bodily constituents.

Maintaining immunity according to Ayurveda:

Chyavanprash, ashvagandha are not the only things that help with immunity.

One can improve or maintain their immunity by:

  1. Following a proper daily routine - a proper and systematic, scientific daily routine should be followed that takes care of normal excretory procedures, detoxification, diet and sleep.
  2. Following proper seasonal regimen- every season has different environmental conditions and thus different regimen. Following proper seasonal routines help avoid seasonal diseases
  3. Taking care of the digestive fire- avoiding over-eating, eating stale food or not eating at proper times can deteriorate the digestive fire ultimately affecting one’s immunity.
  4. Rasayan- certain herbs are meant for improving the strength and immunity of the body. A proper consultation from an ayurvedic physician can help provide guidance.

Taking care of the above mentioned factors helps maintain a state of health and equilibrium in the body, which ultimately provides strength and helps keep the diseases away. Like every body is different, every person may require a different approach to maintain their immunity. An ayurvedic practitioner should be consulted with for focusing on one or a combination of the above factors depending on the requirements of the person’s body.
