Is there a connection between diary and dementia ?

INTRODUCTION:

As dementia cases continue to rise globally, researchers are increasingly exploring how diet influences brain health. While genetics and aging remain the strongest risk factors, nutrition plays a significant role in maintaining cognitive function throughout life. One food group that has received considerable attention is dairy.

BODY:

DEMENTIA:

Dementia is not a single disease but a group of conditions characterized by a decline in memory, thinking, reasoning, and daily functioning. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form, accounting for approximately 60–70% of dementia cases.

DAIRY:

Dairy products such as milk, yogurt, cheese, and fermented dairy foods provide several nutrients that are essential for brain health:

  • High-quality protein
  • Calcium
  • Vitamin B12
  • Riboflavin (Vitamin B2)
  • Phosphorus
  • Potassium
  • Vitamin D (when fortified)
  • Probiotics (in yogurt and fermented dairy)

These nutrients support nerve function, neurotransmitter production, energy metabolism, and overall brain health.

Although, consistent intake of full fat dairy can increase the cardiovascular risk and Vascular Dementia.

Moderate amount, low fat dairy, preferably fermented dairy, can provide,

  • Good gut bacteria
  • Vitamin B12,
  • Good vascular health
  • Reduced inflammation.

Research studies are much better when regular dairy consumption is coupled with eating healthy foods and having a healthy lifestyle like:

  1. Eating plenty of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts, and seeds
  2. Including healthy fats such as olive oil and omega-3-rich foods
  3. Consuming adequate protein
  4. Maintaining regular physical activity
  5. Managing blood pressure, diabetes, and cholesterol
  6. Getting sufficient sleep
  7. Staying mentally and socially active

CONCLUSION:

Low fat Dairy, preferably Fermented Dairy products, when coupled with an overall healthy lifestyle, can help prevent all types of Dementia.
