Is teething and fever related??

Have you ever heard about the myth about teething and fever? Researchers have shown that a localised rise in temperature is considered normal; however, a high fever can be an indicator of some underlying condition.

The rise in temperature can be due to

  • Production of inflammatory mediators, such as cytokines and growth factors, that cause local and systemic effects

  • Another possible reason is a dip in the material immunity, and the transition of passive to active immunity can cause infection in children. This occurs around 6 months, which coincides with the age of tooth eruption.

Many misconceptions revolve around teething. It’s the duty of paediatricians and pediatric dentists to educate the parents regarding this. Fever is a symptom that is wrongly attributed to teething, which may be a sign of another underlying condition that needs attention.

Yes, there are quite a few teething myths I’ve heard like the idea that teething causes severe fever, vomiting, or that babies grow faster or slower because of it. Most of these are misconceptions. Teething mainly causes mild discomfort, drooling, and gum irritation not serious illness.
