Psyllium husk (Isabgol) is one of the most widely recommended natural supplements for gut health, but most people only associate it with constipation. In reality, its benefits go far beyond that.
Regular intake has been associated with improved LDL cholesterol and blood sugar levels. It slows down glucose absorption, thus making one feel fuller for longer and preventing insulin spikes. It also helps lower systolic blood pressure and is recommended as an adjunct to hypertension treatment. It is also a prebiotic for our gut bacteria.
However, psyllium is not harmless just because it is natural. Taking it without adequate water can cause bloating and even intestinal obstruction in rare cases. It can also interfere with the absorption of some medications.
Isabgol has been consumed and trusted for generations and can be a great part of our diet in today’s times, when fibre intake is very low as people consume more processed foods.
Do you think Isabgol deserves greater public attention?
