Is Limb Dominance Learned? UCLA Study Challenges a Long-Held Brain Theory

It is often considered limb dominance as an evidence for intrinsic advantage of the dominant hemisphere of brain in motor control. Contrary to this a new study from UCLA Health researchers suggests it might be simply because the dominant hand had more practice.

This study challenges the long standing hypothesis that the dominant hemisphere of the brain is inherently better at controlling movement.

“The dominant arm isn’t more capable because one hemisphere of the brain is simply better at controlling movement. It is because we’ve spent a lifetime practicing the specific, complicated movements that tools and handwriting demand. Take away that practice by switching to a body part like the elbow that’s never done the task before and the advantage disappears.”

The research team concluded that the skill gap between an individual’s dominant and non-dominant limbs largely disappears in the right conditions. Two experiments were conducted by the team

  1. Tracking the 3D arm movements of healthy adults using motion-capture cameras when reached toward a targets under three conditions:
    • Normal reaching,
    • Reaching while wearing a four-pound wrist weight
    • Reaching while holding a lightweight stick strapped to the forearm to mimic tool us
  2. Participants were asked to write letters and numbers using a pen, first with their hand and later with a pen taped to their elbow(which is an effector they’d never used for writing before).

During the first experiment both dominant and nondominant hand performed the same even with the weight attached to it. While writing with their elbow both performed poorly at first, but with practice similar improvement was noticed with both the hands.

According to the research team limb dominance is predominantly about learned control of tool kinematics rather than baseline asymmetry in control of limb dynamics. This research can be helpful to stroke survivors and others relearning motor skills.

It suggests that the non-dominant limb has the exact same baseline potential for fine motor control if we design the right training environments.

This is a fascinating finding. It reminds us that many of our abilities are shaped by consistent practice rather than being fixed from birth. It also gives hope that, with the right rehabilitation and training, people recovering from neurological injuries can regain important motor skills.
