Is Iron Deficiency the Only Cause of Anemia We Focus Too Much On?

Whenever we hear about anemia, the first thing that comes to mind is iron deficiency. But in reality, anemia is a much broader condition with multiple underlying causes—like vitamin B12 deficiency, chronic diseases, genetic conditions, or even poor absorption.

In many cases, people are directly advised iron supplements without proper diagnosis. This can sometimes delay identifying the actual cause, especially in patients with symptoms like fatigue, weakness, or dizziness that overlap across different types of anemia.

I’ve also noticed that dietary advice is often generalized, without considering individual needs or underlying health issues. For example, someone with B12 deficiency may not benefit from iron-rich foods alone.

This makes me wonder whether we sometimes oversimplify anemia management and miss the bigger picture.

Do you think anemia is often misdiagnosed as just iron deficiency? What steps can improve accurate diagnosis and awareness?
