Is Automatic toothbrush the future of brushing?

We all know that brushing teeth twice a day is key to maintaining good oral health. However many people still rush through it, brush just once, miss areas or don’t brush long enough and correctly. Here comes the automatic brush, which can brush all your teeth surfaces simultaneously in just 30 seconds.

So, will it change the future of brushing?

Let’s explore

Automatic brush is a U shaped mouthpiece styled toothbrush that fits over upper and lower teeth simultaneously. It uses nylon or silicone bristles and vibrations or sonic technology.

How to use it?

Apply a toothpaste to both sides of the mouthpiece, place it in your mouth and bite down gently. Turn on the device, moving it side-to-side and in small circular motions for 30 seconds. After the timer ends remove the brush, rinse the mouth piece with water and keep it in cool, dry place.

How can it be beneficial over manual or electric tooth brush?

· Time saving

· Easy for children and patients who lack manual dexterity

· Requires minimal technique

Even though it is user friendly and less time consuming, questions remain about its ability to reach the interproximal areas and remove plaque as thoroughly as manual and electric tooth brush. Moreover, it is quite expensive making it less accessible for many people.

Bottom line

It’s a good innovation and would be helpful for selected individuals. But faster does not mean better. Conventional brushing and flossing still stands out as the most reliable method of maintaining oral hygiene.

If you are physically unable to manually brush your teeth then this is a good option. But if you are fit, then manually brushing your teeth in the morning has many advantages. It keeps your motor connections active, you can adjust which area to focus on to brush and if done with your non-dominant hand it may increase the brain activity.

“Interesting perspective  Automatic toothbrushes could definitely help people who rush brushing or miss areas. However, long-term effectiveness, plaque removal compared to manual/electric brushes, and user adaptability will decide if they truly become the future. Still, a promising innovation for improving oral hygiene compliance.”
