Indians and their beliefs

I was posted in surgery . I saw a pregnant lady diagnosed with oral cancer . She was around 28 something . She used to use mishri ( a powdered tobacco product ) as a dentrifice daily . It is applied on gums and used in my state widely in rural areas . Their cultural pattern involves using mishri everyday as a mean to clean their gums .

What are some other cultural belief’s you have came across ?

Indians believe equally well in Ayurveda and Homeopathy and everything revolves around Thanda Garam and we spend whole life making these correlations, often without scientific basis. This unshakeable ‘faith’ makes Indians a different class altogether :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes::grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:
Note: For comparison, Americans can not live without ice. Even if there is snow fall outside, ghar / office mein paani ke saath adding ice is a compulsory ritual.

That’s a powerful observation. I’ve come across similar cultural practices—like giving honey to newborns for good luck (which can risk botulism), or applying kajal to babies’ eyes for protection from the evil eye, which can cause eye irritation

Cultural beliefs have always shaped the way Indians perceive health, illness, and healing — from Ayurveda and home remedies to faith-based practices.

In Indian culture, the concept of ‘hot’ and ‘cold’ foods isn’t about temperature but about their perceived energy effect on the body — for instance, curd and banana are seen as cooling, while jaggery and ghee are believed to generate heat and vitality.

When a black cat crosses our path, we either change directions or do something to “negate” its effects :joy::joy:

  1. If the baby doesn’t apply kajal, the baby will have brown irises.
  2. Giving honey to babies on the 28th day as a part of the ritual.

That’s such a striking observation.

Cultural habits like using mishri truly highlight how deep-rooted traditions can impact health. I’ve also seen practices like applying mustard oil or charcoal for dental cleaning and using cow dung or herbal concoctions for wound healing, beliefs that need gentle awareness and education to change. :herb::stethoscope:
