Imagine if your next streetlight was actually a tree.

MIT scientists created glowing plants by mimicking fireflies, using the enzyme luciferase, which emits light when reacting with luciferin. Coenzyme A was also added to clear byproducts that could block the reaction. To deliver these components, they used nanoparticles: luciferase in silica particles, luciferin in PLGA, and coenzyme A in chitosan. Initially glowing for 45 minutes, the plants now glow for up to 3.5 hours thanks to improved delivery methods.

This is truly mind blowing, but I wish we could have the fireflies back sometimes…
