Managing a broken file in a root canal requires careful consideration. Options include retrieval, bypassing, or sealing in place.

The approach depends on the file’s location, type, and canal anatomy.

Retrieval attempts may be made with specialized instruments. Bypassing involves navigating around the broken file.

Sealing in place may be considered if retrieval is not feasible. Consulting an endodontist may be beneficial in complex cases.

File separation in endodontic treatment may occur, prognosis depends on the location of the separated instrument and whether the file was sterilized or not. There are many file retrieval systems in dentistry. If it cannot be removed it can be by passed, or left in place if not strategically located.

Broken file management depends on its location. If accessible, it can be retrieved using ultrasonic tips; if it’s deep, it may be bypassed or left if there’s no infection. When in doubt, referring to an endodontist is the best option.
