Social media has a big influence on our lives, as most of the times consciously or unconsciously we are using it. It has become like a past time for everyone these days. When we get bored or we are taking a break from something, we tend to go to any social media first and till we feel complete, we keep on watching it. So what sort of content we are watching, that makes a big difference. If we are endlessly scrolling, then it just results in time wastage, but if we are using it to learn something like if we are reading some positive quotes, we are learning about discoveries and technologies, we are learning about policies and regulations that exist in the country, we are reading about the advices coming from experts of various fields, we are exploring few pages related to our productive hobbies that make us learn something etc., then in that case social media will be very useful. If one is using social media to build a community on their own providing some genuine information, they can make a global impact. So it’s the perception and how we want to use it, that makes all the difference.

:warning: Negative Impacts on Behavior

  • Addiction & Attention Span: The dopamine-driven feedback loop of likes and notifications can lead to compulsive use and reduced focus.
  • Anxiety & Depression: Excessive use, especially when combined with upward social comparison, is linked to increased depression and lower self-esteem.
  • Cyberbullying & Hostility: Social media can amplify aggression and bullying, especially among youth.
  • Echo Chambers & Misinformation: Algorithms often reinforce existing beliefs, reducing exposure to diverse perspectives and increasing polarization.
  • Identity Pressure: The pressure to present a curated, idealized self can distort self-image and hinder authentic relationships

Social media contents affect us hugely. I am not talking about how it consumes so much time, I mean it does, and everyone knows about it, but I am talking about the algorithm or the contents of how it affects our life. There are so many things in social media that gives us false info, makes someone insecure about themselves, spreading negativity and all while other posts conveys the message of peace, understanding, right informations about anything, positivity and all. So I am saying that it depends on the creators how they create their content to influence people.
