Holy grail of HIV

Researchers at the La Jolla Institute for immunology and scripps Research details a novel vaccine that successfully triggered rare broadly neutralizing antibodies (bnAbs) in 44% of non-human primates.

These antibodies are considered the ‘holy grail’ of vaccine research because they can recognize and block a wide array of rapidly mutating HIV strains.

For more than four decades, HIV has remained one of the world’s most challenging infectious diseases. This research has brought a new hope with the discovery of (bnAbs).

So what are these?

These are specialised immune proteins capable of binding to conserved regions of the HIV envelope proteins. bNAbs can neutralize multiple HIV subtypes by attacking regions of the virus that rarely mutate.
