Most hospitals and clinics face the challange of high patient turnover nowadays . This refers to the speed at which patients are admitted, treated, and discharged.
More patients in less time = higher numbers of services delivered.
However, the reality is more complex.
High turnover often comes at a cost:
• Communication Gap: It creates a systemic barrier , as the limited time for each OPD visit prevents doctors from providing the proper explanations to diagnosis and treatment necessary for complex care.
•Burnout: Staff working in this environments often face extreme stress and exhaustion, which can lead to medical errors.
•Frequent readmissions: If a patient is discharged too early to meet a turnover goal, they are more likely to suffer complications causing readmission .
In India, doctors often see dozens of patients a day in very short, fast-paced consultations focused on quick diagnosis and treatment. While in many foreign countries, the system relies on pre-booked appointments that allow for longer consultation period. This creates a difference between immediate access for the masses in India and detailed, personal time for each individual in the West.
While it is necessary to manage the massive number of people needing help, it must never come at the expense of the doctor-patient relationship.
