Head and neck cancer

Head and neck cancer

The incidence of cancer is increasing every year. Head and neck cancer develops from the epithelial lining of the mucosal surfaces of paranasal sinuses, nasal cavity, oral cavity, pharynx and larynx.

Risk factors associated with head and neck cancers

  • Tobacco and alcohol use

  • Human papillomavirus and Epstein-Barr virus

  • Occupational and environmental exposures

  • Dietary and nutritional factors

  • Genetics

Preventive measures should be taken to reduce the risk of cancer. Cancer screening is important, and educating people about the early signs and symptoms is also important.

Preventive strategies include

  • Tobacco and smoking cessation

  • Cancer screening

  • HPV vaccination

  • Nutritional interventions, such as improving nutrition

  • Awareness programme

In future, new diagnostic methods for early detection and targeted therapies that can prevent morbidity and mortality should be developed.

Head and neck cancers are rising, and most cases are linked to preventable risk factors like tobacco, alcohol, and HPV infection. Strengthening screening, promoting HPV vaccination, and increasing awareness about early symptoms can make a major difference in early detection. Integrating lifestyle changes with better diagnostic tools and targeted therapies is key to reducing the burden in the future.
