Hemochromatosis

Bronze-colored skin and elevated ferritin levels are indicative of hemochromatosis, a condition characterized by excessive iron absorption. Treatment should focus on lowering iron levels.

Disease :- Hemochromatosis
Diagnosis :- Such as blood test
Elevated levels indicated iron overload

The disease is Hemochromatosis

  • The trick to identify this disease is this triad in middle aged men -
fatigue + bronze coloured skin + diabetes
  • The hint also gives it away - iron is good in small amounts but toxic when higher concentration ( hemachromatosis is due to excessive iron absorption)

The treatment plan includes - regular phlebotomy to remove excess iron from blood and then maintain serum feritin levels at 50- 100mg
