From AIPMT to NEET: One Exam, One Dream

The All India Pre-Medical Test (AIPMT) was administered by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) between 1988 and 2013. It functioned as the national-level entrance examination for students seeking admission into MBBS and BDS undergraduate programs offered by medical and dental colleges across India.

Admission Process

Under the AIPMT system, 15% of the seats were filled through the All India Quota (AIQ) using central counselling conducted by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC). The remaining 85% of seats were filled through state-level counselling, based on state merit lists.

Why Was AIPMT Replaced by NEET?

Before NEET, students had to take many state and private medical entrance exams, which caused high costs, stress, and confusion. Different exam patterns and difficulty levels across states also created unequal opportunities for students.

To address these challenges, the Government of India, along with the Medical Council of India (MCI), introduced NEET in 2013 as a single, uniform medical entrance examination for students across the country.

Why NEET Benefits Students

· Reduces Stress and Confusion – With just one exam, students avoid the hassle of juggling multiple tests.

· Saves Time and Expenses – Preparing for a single entrance exam lowers both effort and costs.

· Ensures Fair Admissions – Selection based on merit makes the process clear and unbiased.

· Provides Equal Opportunity – Students from all backgrounds have a fair chance to succeed

Challenges of NEET for Students

· Higher Competition
Having a single national exam has made competition for top ranks much tougher, which can lead to stress and anxiety.

· Difficult for Rural Students
Students from rural areas may not have easy access to the best NEET study materials, coaching, or sample papers, making preparation harder.

· Syllabus Differences
NEET follows a CBSE-based syllabus, which can be challenging for students from other state boards to adapt to within limited time, even with available question banks and sample papers.

This was the best decision as we can fully give our focus to one single exam. But that being said it also has the added responsibility of not messing this up as we don’t have any other choices the same year. Two sides of the coin.

Balanced and informative. NEET simplified admissions, but the pressure of one high-stakes exam is real the support systems and equitable resources are key to making it truly fair.

NEET Really works well if functioned properly. Whereas during the time of alloting seats by colleges, college should personally conduct interview or exams for their seat confirmation. Because a lot of seats are actually taken away from eligible students by the donation system. Hence, I believe NEET should be centralized and each college should have a seperate examination procedure after neet for seat selection or confirmation.
