Fear is a survival instinct, wired deep within the human brain to protect us from danger. But what happens when fear is absent? In rare conditions like Urbach–Wiethe disease, damage to the amygdala - the brain’s fear center — prevents individuals from experiencing fear, even in life-threatening situations. While this may sound like bravery, it is actually dangerous.
Fear teaches caution, shapes decision-making and helps us recognize risk before harm occurs. Without fear, people may repeatedly place themselves in unsafe situations, unaware of consequences until it is too late. This reminds us that fear is not weakness; it is wisdom encoded by evolution. It keeps us alert, humble and alive. Rather than eliminating fear, learning to understand and regulate it is what truly empowers us. If fear disappeared completely, would courage still have meaning? Definitely a big NO. What do you think?
In your daily life, has fear ever helped you avoid a risky decision?
