FDA Approves First New Sunscreen Ingredient in 25 Years

For the first time in more than 25 years, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a new sunscreen ingredient, bemotrizinol. Widely used in Europe, Asia, and other parts of the world, bemotrizinol is known for providing broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays while remaining highly photostable under sun exposure. Experts say the ingredient can help improve sunscreen formulations by enhancing effectiveness and durability when combined with other UV filters.

The approval comes after years of debate over expanding sunscreen options available to American consumers and is being viewed as a significant step forward for sun protection innovation in the United States. As skin cancer rates continue to rise and public awareness of sun safety grows, the decision could pave the way for more advanced sunscreen products in the years ahead.
