Rain or Shine, Screen or Sun: Why Sunscreen Still Matters?

Most people think sunscreen is only for summer, beaches, or bright sunny days. But here’s the truth: it’s not the sunlight that harms your skin—it’s the UV rays. And those rays don’t take a break just because the weather changes.

UV rays can penetrate clouds, windows, and even thin clothing. So whether it’s monsoon, winter, or you’re working indoors near a window, your skin is still exposed—even if you don’t feel it.

There are two main types of UV rays to be concerned about:

  • UVA rays: These penetrate deeper into the skin and are responsible for aging, pigmentation, and even cancer.

  • UVB rays: These cause sunburn and also contribute to skin cancer.

What is SPF?

SPF stands for sun protection factor, indicating the level of protection against UVB rays. For example, SPF 30 means you can stay in the sun 30 times longer than without protection before burning.

Higher SPF numbers offer more protection, but no sunscreen can 100% block out UV rays. It’s essential to choose a high SPF for extended outdoor activities and reapply regularly for continuous protection.

Sunscreen is not just a beauty product—it’s a health investment. Dermatologists worldwide recommend daily use because:

  • It protects against photoaging (skin ageing caused by light exposure).

  • It prevents hyperpigmentation, which is one of the most common skin concerns in India.

  • It significantly reduces the risk of skin cancers, including melanoma.

How to Choose the Right Sunscreen?

Not all sunscreens are created equal. For safety and effectiveness:

  • Look for Broad Spectrum SPF (protects against both UVA and UVB).

  • Use SPF 30 or higher for daily wear.

  • Pick the right texture: gel-based for oily skin, cream-based for dry skin, and matte or tinted options for daily use.

  • Reapply every 2–3 hours if outdoors.

Make sunscreen a habit, just like brushing your teeth. Your skin might not thank you immediately, but years later, you’ll be glad you didn’t skip it.

Do you think sunscreen should be marketed more as a health essential rather than just a beauty product?

MBH/PS

Sunscreen is one the health essential and it is better if we start using it as a habit instead of just skincare. It is fundamentally based on disease prevention - protecting against DNA damage, cancers and premature aging.

Yes, sunscreen should not only used in sunny days but also used every day because it’s not the sun harming our skin it’s actually the UV- rays.
