Familial Hypercholesterolemia: Do screen Teenagers for this

Familial Hyperlipidemia (FH) is a common genetic disorder: 1 in 250 people have it. Most common form is inherited as autosomal dominant (AD).

The US data shows that 20 % of the teenagers will have abnormal lipid panel if screened between 9-11 years of age. That is 1 in 5 - a pretty significant number.

Thus, guidelines are: All children should be screened for hyperlipidemia between 9 and 11 years of age and again at 17 to 21 years of age.
Note: Another form of hyperlipidemia is Multi-factorial (MH)- eg that happens partly due to external factors, like obesity, dietary habits.

Is this screening practice prevalent in your region/country?

Very informative, I don’t think a lot of people are aware about this, but surely we need to wake up and act on it screening should be promoted and awareness should be spread.

informative post. early screening for FH is crucial ,yet still underutilized in many places like India. increasing awareness and routine checks could significantly improve early detections and long-term outcomes.

This particular information is new to me. I believe that people aren’t aware about genetic disorders neither do they go for any genetic screening, because Indians are very cost-oriented.

This is really informative. Screening at that age sounds very important, especially for conditions like familial hypercholesterolemia that can go unnoticed for years. Awareness about this should definitely increase.

This being a common genetic disorder most of the population in India are not aware of this. There is a need to create awareness about this among people and also screening for this condition should be encouraged.

Many individuals are not even ware about familial hyperlipidemia. Awareness is the key to approach in early stages.

Very informative and well drafted!

Wow . It is so informativee

While the guidelines exist, the proactive universal screening of all children for hyperlipidemia is not yet fully embedded as routine practice in India, leading to many missed diagnoses.:smiling_face_with_tear:

Very insightful.

Well said, from health care perceptive early screening ofhyperlipidemia at a young age can change the entire trajectory of an individual’s health. It’s helps to reduce long term helthcare disease.
