Expectations Vs Reality of studying abroad.

There are multiple plans we make when we move abroad to study but not all turn into reality. Here are some of my realities that I faced when I moved abroad for MBBS.

I’ll cook healthy meals.
Reality: Instant noodles are the ultimate savior :steaming_bowl:

I’ll travel every weekend.
Reality: hospital to hostel loop :double_curly_loop:

I’ll be confident in Vivas.
Reality: I forgot the basic definition of “what is a muscle” while fighting for life during my first viva.

I’ll stay calm and focused.
Reality: Breakdown is my compulsory formula before an exam. :upside_down_face:

:sunflower:*** What were your expectations vs reality of medical life?? *** :sunflower:

One Ravi mortgaged his family’s land to chase a dream abroad. The first weeks felt exciting but soon the silence of unfamiliar streets, strange food, harsh winters, and a foreign language weighed on him. What looked glamorous from afar felt lonely up close. He realized too late that success is not only about distance traveled, but roots understood.

Forever, your people and your nation stand as the best!

So real and painfully relatable
Studying MBBS abroad definitely humbles you—instant noodles, hospital-hostel life, and viva panic become the new normal.
But these struggles shape resilience, discipline, and confidence in the long run.
Every future doctor has this phase—and it’s all part of the journey

Moving abroad for studies or career definitely takes courage, discipline, and a strong mindset. The expectations may not always match reality, but every challenge shapes resilience and growth. It’s a big step, but often one that builds a stronger and better future in ways we don’t initially see.

If you choose to go abroad, don’t pick the cheapest college. Pick the one with the highest FMGE passing percentage and a strong Indian student community. You’ll need that support system when the -20°C winter hits and you’re missing home-cooked food and language barrier also.

very true, there is definitely a gap in expectations and reality

Great points! People often miss the reality of the academic shift. Moving from familiar study habits to a new system while juggling work and research deadlines is a massive adjustment. It’s not just about a new location; it’s about adapting your entire professional identity to a different culture’s standards. It’s exhausting, but the perspective you gain on global healthcare is unmatched. Thanks for keeping it real!

A lot of people go abroad expecting a massive paycheck, and yeah the salary numbers look great on paper. But once rent, taxes, insurance, transport, and basic living costs hit… the “huge” paycheck suddenly feels very average.

So true !!

We manifest a lot but sometimes situations changes many things ,but there’s a need to keep calm and control oneself to work over manifestations.
