Ethical dilemmas faced by pharmacists and nurses

Pharmacists and nurses often face tough choices that test their ethics. For example, giving a medicine they know might not work, or following hospital rules that go against a patient’s best interest. Sometimes they must choose between saving time or giving full care. These situations cause stress and moral confusion. They want to help, but rules, pressure, or fear of punishment can stop them. Training, support, and clear policies are needed to help them make the right choices confidently.

Ethical challenges in healthcare aren’t just theoretical they happen every day in the lives of pharmacists, nurses, and other frontline professionals. When compassion clashes with protocols, it creates a silent burden. Recognising this struggle is the first step. But more importantly, we need to create a culture where doing the right thing is supported, not punished through training, open dialogue, and leadership that listens. Because in the end, ethical care isn’t just about rules it’s about people.

If they violate the rules even once or slightly slips from that , they have to answer to lots of people , which is not easy.

I’ve seen how hard it is for pharmacists and nurses to balance what’s “in the guidelines” with what’s best for the patient. Sometimes we know what the right thing is, but rules or fear of consequences hold us back.
Strong support, open conversations, and clear ethical guidance can make it easier to do what we came into healthcare for.
