  • Increases the inhibitory effects of GABA
  • Binds to synaptic vesicle protein (SV2A) and reduces release of excitatory neurotransmitters
  • Prolongs inactive state of voltage-gated sodium channels, suppressing repetitive firing of neurons
  • Block T-type calcium channels in thalamic neurons

Other anti-epileptic drugs include Carbamazepine, phenobarbitone,clonazepam

Carbamazepine is usually effective in treating complex partial seizures.

In neonates, we still use phenobarbital as first line of drug in case of seizures.

Levetiracetam is often used if we need for prolonged use. Never used Brivaracetam.
