Recently there are many claims made that eye drops can cure cataract. This is not true.
Everyone has a natural clear lens in the eye, through which external light is focused and a sharp image falls on the retina.
The lens, made of tightly packed lens proteins that make it clear. Aging causes the proteins to clump together, leading to cloudiness of the lens & blurring of vision. The cloudiness is cataract.
Eyedrops act only on the surface
they cannot penetrate to the level of the lens to dissolve the cataract.
This is because there exists a blood - aqueous barrier which limits what can actually enter through into the eye.
The proteins are made up of large insoluble molecules.
The lens proteins become harder as cataract progresses. It would require a strong chemical to dissolve the protein molecules which can cause damage to surrounding cells & can cause severe inflammation.
There is no FDA approved pharmaceutical treatment for cataracts
The management for this is only surgery, by which this lens is removed & a new artificial lens is implanted in its position. This lens implantation is permanent.
The surgery also corrects any refractive error previously.
Knowing the science behind the issue leads to the right solution.
