Doomscrolling and Anxiety: What’s the Connection?”

You opened the phone for 5 mins, next you check the time it’s 20 minutes past.

That’s called doomscrolling.

What happens to the brain?

  • Constant exposure to alarming content keeps the brain in “threat mode”
  • Stress hormones like cortisol rise
  • Sleep quality drops
  • Attention span decreases
  • Anxiety and overthinking become worse

The brain starts believing the world is only danger, crisis, and fear.

Signs you may be doomscrolling:

  • Checking news/social media compulsively
  • Feeling mentally exhausted after scrolling
  • Trouble sleeping after screen time
  • Increased anxiety or irritability
  • Feeling informe but emotionally drained

How to break the cycle:

  • Set screen time limits
  • Avoid scrolling before sleep
  • Follow content that educates or uplifts
  • Take “no-phone” breaks during the day
  • Replace scrolling with movement, reading, or real conversations

Staying informed is important. But protecting your mental health is important too.

Phones will be helpful to upgrade our knowledge but nowadays, I all are getting addicted to it like a person addicted to alcohol. This can be reduced by face to face conversations.

I believe setting small targets for the day and being productive can prevent doom scrolling which in itself is a time killer.

i also feel the more you scroll, the more anxiety you get so there is no point of using your phone as a distraction
