Sometimes when we stand at the same place for too long, we pass out. Frequent episodes of such fainting might suggest something more than hypoglycemia.
Orthostatic hypotension can occur because of volume depletion that is decreased blood volume as in dehydration, blood loss and excess diuretics. It can also occur in Diabetes Mellitus, Parkinsonism and spinal cord injuries or have cardiac causes where in cardiac output gets reduced like aortic stenosis, arrhythmias and CHF.
While orthostatic hypotension has clinical causes, it may also appear due to lack of sleep resulting in autonomic instability. It follows the same vasovagal mechanism as fainting in this case.
Have you experienced such frequent episodes of fainting on prolonged standing. And what could be the differential diagnoses for this apart from orthostatic hypotension?
