Do Gold Medals in MBBS Still Matter Today?

Gold medals in MBBS have always been seen as a sign of academic excellence. For many students, they represent years of discipline, consistency, and hard work. Traditionally, they were associated with recognition, respect, and better academic opportunities.

But the medical world is changing.

Today, there is much more emphasis on clinical skills, communication, research exposure, and performance in postgraduate entrance exams. This makes many of us wonder whether gold medals still translate into real advantages, or whether they have become more of a symbolic achievement.

So let’s talk about it.

Do gold medals actually influence career growth today? Have you seen them help in real clinical or academic settings, or not make much difference at all? Should our definition of excellence in MBBS go beyond marks and ranks?

Gold medals in MBBS can open some doors, but true clinical excellence and compassionate patient care are what really matter in today’s healthcare environment. A medal is a milestone, not a destination - continuous learning, teamwork, and real-world experience shape the doctor we become. :light_bulb:
What do others think about balancing academic accolades with practical skills?

In almost every field just the academic expertise is not sufficient. Even while we go to a restaurant, even if we love the food the ambience, the way the staff talks to us, their service all matter. Similarly in healthcare too along with good academic knowledge as you said communication skills and clinical knowledge is the key to have a sustained patient flow as well as to help them in a better way.

This article raises an interesting question — gold medals in MBBS still reflect dedication and strong academic performance, and they’re certainly an honour worth celebrating. However, in today’s evolving healthcare landscape, they’re just one part of the picture. Skills, clinical exposure, communication, and postgraduate training often weigh more heavily in shaping long-term career outcomes than academic accolades alone. Balancing recognition of merit with development of practical competence is what truly matters going forward.

Medals are a reflection of our hard work, dedication and resilience for a specific degree. However, the real world scenario is much more than that. It is our experience, attitude towards any problem in the long run, and tenacity in tough situations, that make or break us as a professional.

Hello,Such a nice question in this competative world.

I feel gold medal is important for your academic excellence but unfortunately, now a days we can see some gold medalist are good in academically yet they lack good communication skills.

Getting gold medal is good but your other skills are important as well in real world practice.

All doctors should know how to communicate with patients, how to take history of patients, how to handle situations, research skills these skills matters in real world.Gold medal can get extra advantage with your skills.

Gold medal: it sounds so exciting.A medal is given to honour somebody’s achievement or accomplishment. That apart, only medals don’t define a doctor.A doctor is valued based on his expertise, knowledge, approach towards patients and the treatment given. So medals can be a recognition, but doesn’t mean it will increase a doctor’s trademark.

I feel it has both pros and cons as a coin has two sides

On one side it pays you well with the theoretical and clinical knowledge

And on the other hand it also does not get the attention it should get you in an open world

Academic excellence cannot be measured in terms of marks you get in your exams; communication skills, empathy towards patients, and clinical skills cannot be overlooked alongside. The questions in the university exams are mostly memory-based, hence do not assess the decision making power, the ability to act quickly and connect the dots when it comes to making diagnosis.

I feel gold medals do not make much of a difference in terms of career growth in medical field. Maybe initial entry to some of the institutions may be influenced by ranks and marks but growth depends on the level of deep understanding of the subject and expertise in the field. When it comes to government jobs it is mostly based on seniority.
