Do All Living Things Emit Light?

Have you ever wondered if every living thing glows? Surprisingly, the answer is yes but not in the way fireflies do.

Almost all living organisms from plants and bacteria to humans, emit an incredibly faint light called ultra-weak photon emission (biophotons). This glow isn’t visible to our eyes because it’s about 1,000 times weaker than what we can naturally detect.

Where does it come from?

As our cells produce energy, normal chemical reactions create tiny amounts of reactive oxygen species. These reactions can release microscopic flashes of light.

Scientists are studying these biophotons to understand whether they could one day help monitor plant stress, detect disease or reveal changes in cellular health.

So yes, even while you’re reading this, your body is quietly glowing—you just can’t see it.

This completely surprised me! I had no idea that our cells naturally emit ultra-weak biophotons during normal metabolic processes. As a biotechnology student, I find it fascinating that something invisible today could potentially become a future tool for monitoring health and disease.

It’s true. We also emit light. But we can’t see that through the naked eye. If we can see the light, I am in doubt about my experience: it will be good or horrific. :sweat_smile:

As all living things emit some electromagnetic radiation due to their body temperature, which is absolutely above zero.

All cells emit these biophotons, and as these biophotons are created by normal metabolic reactions. An abnormal cell will hence show an abnormal amount of emission.

For eg. Cancer cells

A formation of a type of technology that detects these biophotons and helps compare to normal values would definitely be revolutionary

It’s amazing to think that our bodies are constantly producing tiny flashes of light without us even realizing it.
