Do 1 year olds need flouridated tooth paste?

Since 1 year old won’t know to rinse and spit out after brushing, we don’t recommend flouridated toothpaste. Swallowing of too much flouride can lead to Dental flourosis.

What would you suggest ?

For a 1 year old, instead of completely avoiding using toothpaste, a very small quantity can be used since fluoride helps in protecting teeth against cavities. Small amount is not harmful even if swallowed. But this should be done in complete supervision of the parents. And many times, doctors suggest using low-dose fluoride toothpaste in very small amounts starting with the first tooth.

For 1 year old never suggest fluoride toothpaste, just ask them to rinse with water and clean with cotton cloth after milk.

For a 1-year-old, it’s better to use just a soft toothbrush with plain water. Parents can gently clean the teeth twice a day. Fluoride toothpaste can be started later, usually in very small amounts, once the child learns to spit it out. Till then, keeping good brushing habits and avoiding too many sugary foods is the best way to protect their teeth. Regular dental check-ups also help in monitoring early tooth health.

for a 1-year-old, it’s fine to brush using a soft bristle toothbrush along with normal water. toothpastes these days are mostly mint flavored or sweet flavored and children’s easily swallow it. Along with regular dental checkups are necessary to monitor their tooth health.

I think for kids under 2, use non-fluoride toothpaste. Fluoride is advised only once they can spit properly to avoid fluorosis.
