DIVIDED BY COMPETITION, UNITED BY SHARED EXPERIENCES: Friendships in medical field

If there is anything that we need to survive the ups and downs of life, it’s friendship. Like every other field, in medicine too, friends and friendships play a key role in one’s professional journey. But, friendships in the medical field often come with two sides.

On one hand, there is intense competition among fellows, classmates and sometimes, sadly, friends. The nature of our profession and the pressure that we are subjected to forces us to be competitive.

On the other hand, the experiences that we share with our fellows helps us let our competitive guard down. The assignments that all our batchmates struggle with together, the visits to same PHCs, the lectures that we all attended and the same amount of pressure that this profession applies to all, creates a bond that is hard to forget, a friendship that we cherish. And most importantly, the contacts and networking that we build throughout our academic and professional journey is commendable.

“Beautifully put. There is a unique bond forged in shared sleepless nights and PHC visits that no other profession quite understands. The competition makes us sharper, but the friendships are what keep us sane.”
