Have you ever noticed tiny itchy bumps on your skin after a sweaty workout at the gym? Or maybe, as a child, you woke up with a rash on a hot summer day? That is an allergic reaction to your own sweat, and this breakout is called ‘Cholinergic Urticaria’.
What causes Cholinergic Urticaria?
It is triggered by any stimulus that causes excessive heat production and sweating in the body. In response, the nervous system releases cholinergic chemicals like acetylcholine from the nerve endings near the skin. This chemical irritates the skin, causing an allergic reaction that results in hives and swelling.
What are the Symptoms?
It presents as pinpoint bumps with red flares or circles around them called wheals. They are most commonly seen on the chest, upper back, face and arms. These may be associated with itching, burning and tingling.
What are the complications?
In some instances, cholinergic urticaria could be associated with anaphylaxis. It is a life-threatening allergic reaction that can swell your airways, making it difficult to breathe.
How to prevent Cholinergic urticaria?
- Avoid spicy foods.
- Exercise early in the morning or late in the evening when outside temperatures are lower.
- Take warm (not hot) showers or baths.
- Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, sweat-wicking clothing.
