Dental Floss vs Water Flosser: Which One Works Better?

String Floss (Waxed Dental Floss)

String floss also known as dental floss, is a thin filament typically made of nylon or Teflon, designed to slide between teeth to remove plaque and food debris from areas a toothbrush can’t reach.

Pros:

  • Inexpensive and widely available
  • Offers precise control
  • Excellent for removing plaque buildup

Cons:

  • Can be difficult to use with braces, bridges, or tight teeth
  • Requires proper technique
  • May cause minor bleeding if used too forcefully

Water Flosser (Oral Irrigator)

A water flosser is a device that aims a stream of water at the teeth. It’s also called an oral irrigator or a dental water jet.

Pros:

  • User-friendly, especially for people with Orthodontic appliances/Braces/Implants
  • Gentle on sensitive gums
  • Can reach deeper under the gumline

Cons:

  • More expensive
  • Requires electricity or charging
  • Less effective at physically scraping off sticky plaque

I do floss almost daily with the string floss.. But never used water flosser till now. It might be better considering the fact there will be less pressure from our side and less chances of injury.

Yes, it’s a recent technology and a bit expensive too, so not many people use it yet!

In my opinion, both dental floss and water flossers have their place, but I find water flossers more convenient—especially for people with braces or sensitive gums. However, for thorough plaque removal, traditional floss is still more effective. Ideally, combining both gives the best oral hygiene results.
