Fixed Dose Combinations (FDCs) are being increasingly used to improve compliance and achieve greater benefits of the two or more active ingredients given together than the corresponding individual drug components given separately.
FDCs are increasing in practice as they simplify treatment, reduce the burden of taking multiple pills and sometimes even lower risk of antibiotics resistance. At the same time, untested FDCs can pose safety concern, so proper regulations are necessary.
Important issue to consider, Some fixed-dose combos (FDCs) like the cardiovascular “Polycap” polypill are well-researched and helpful. But many others, especially in painkillers, cold syrups, or CNS drugs, come with no clear health benefit and were approved without thorough trials. Despite repeated bans and central regulation, a large number of unapproved or irrational FDCs still find their way into the market raising safety concerns over drug interactions, resistance, and side effects.
