DXM, a common ingredient in over-the-counter cough syrups, is often seen as harmless. But at high doses, it becomes something very different—causing hallucinations, confusion, and even life-threatening effects.
“Robo-tripping” and “skittling” are slang terms for the recreational misuse of DXM especially among teens and young adults—thanks to its easy availability and misleading safety image.
Despite being legal and easily accessible, DXM is not risk-free, especially when:
- Mixed with alcohol or antidepressants
- Taken in extracted or powdered forms
- Combined with other OTC ingredients like acetaminophen or pseudoephedrine
Should there be age restrictions or tighter regulations on DXM-containing OTC medications, given their abuse potential? Or is awareness the better solution?
