IOPA โ€“ Intraoral Periapical Radiograph
What it shows: A 2D cross-sectional image focusing on a single tooth and its surrounding structures.

Uses:

Root canal treatment (before, during, and after the procedure)

Deep cavity diagnosis

Detection of periapical infections or abscess

Evaluation before and after tooth extraction

Checking fillings and crowns


OPG โ€“ Orthopantomogram
What it shows: A panoramic X-ray of the entire mouth, including all teeth, the upper (maxilla) and lower (mandible) jaws, and the TMJ (temporomandibular joints).

Uses:

Assessment of wisdom tooth impaction

Orthodontic treatment planning

Detection of jaw fractures

Diagnosis of cysts, tumors, or other jaw pathologies

General dental check-ups, especially before surgery.

Yes,that reminds me in OMR we would take each otherโ€™s IOPA to learn how to take IOPA.

I can totally relate that. I had an impacted wisdom and I was a special case for IOPA assignment :joy:

During our college years , we used to manually develop the xrays using developing solutions. now everything is digitalised.
