Common foods can quietly interfere with medications

Good to know about this in detail👍🏻

A food-drug interaction what I have heard is that green tea consumption can greatly reduce the effectiveness of the beta-blocker nadolol (a drug utilized for high BP issues and angina). Various research articles have highlighted that green tea catechins (especially EGCG - Epigallocatechin gallate) block the intestinal transporters that are needed for the drug’s absorption and thereby weakening its blood pressure-lowering effect. So for patients taking this drug, regular green tea consumption may need to be limited or, timed carefully.

Cranberry juice + warfarin → May increase warfarin levels, raising bleeding risk.

High-fiber bran cereals + digoxin → Fiber can bind the drug, lowering its absorption.

Dairy-based products such as tetracyclines can drastically reduce the effectiveness of antibiotics because calcium binds the drug in the stomach, inhibiting absorption. This explains why scheduling medications with meals is so essential.

This is a very crucial list of valuable information, I will try to keep note. Thank You for sharing!

Patient counselling for pharmacist a session in which all round information should be given. Most often than not, food drug interactions take a backseat. This has to be changed for better patient care.

True, It’s crazy how common foods like grapefruit, dairy, or leafy greens can mess with medication effects without us even knowing. As a pharmacy student, I’ve seen how important it is to check food-drug interactions, especially for ones like warfarin or statins. A little knowledge at the dinner table can make a big difference.
