Clinical Research – Discussion

Clinical research is a systematic study conducted in humans to evaluate the safety, efficacy, and effectiveness of drugs, medical devices, diagnostic tools, and treatment strategies. It plays a crucial role in translating laboratory discoveries into clinical practice and improving patient care.

Clinical research includes different types of studies such as interventional studies (clinical trials) and observational studies (cohort, case-control, and cross-sectional studies). Clinical trials are usually conducted in phases (Phase I–IV) to assess safety, dosage, efficacy, and post-marketing surveillance.

Ethical principles are central to clinical research. Informed consent, patient safety, confidentiality, and compliance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines ensure the rights and well-being of participants. Regulatory bodies like DCGI, ICMR, CDSCO, and Ethics Committees oversee clinical research in India.
