Climate change is considered the biggest global health threat of the twenty-first century.
The impact of climate change on pregnancy has only recently been included in ongoing concerns, meaning enough data is not yet available. It is worthwhile to note that preterm birth, stillbirth, and low birth weight are greatly impacted by the direct and indirect effects of climate change during pregnancy.
One of the most noticeable impacts comes from heatwaves and pollution. Pregnant women are in a particularly vulnerable state of health due to changes in physiology; cases of preeclampsia and gestational diabetes are increasingly being noted due to extreme heat exposure.
While simple steps like adequate hydration and well-ventilated spaces can help mitigate immediate issues, it still remains a formidable obstetrical challenge.
Do you know someone who was impacted by climate change during their pregnancy? How can we contribute to this?
