Chemical Peels: How They Work and Their Role in Skin Rejuvenation

Chemical peels are cosmetic skin treatments that use acids to remove damaged outer skin layers and stimulate new skin cell growth. They are commonly used to improve acne, pigmentation, dullness, uneven texture, and early signs of aging.

What Are AHAs and BHAs?

Chemical peels mainly use two categories of exfoliating acids:

AHAs (Alpha Hydroxy Acids)

AHAs are water-soluble acids that mainly act on the skin’s surface.

Common examples:

  • Glycolic acid

  • Lactic acid

  • Mandelic acid

How AHAs Work

AHAs weaken the bonds between dead skin cells in the outer layer of the skin, allowing them to shed more easily. This increases skin cell turnover and stimulates collagen production over time.

Benefits of AHAs

AHAs are generally preferred for dry, sun-damaged, or aging skin.

BHAs (Beta Hydroxy Acids)

The most common BHA is salicylic acid.

BHAs are oil-soluble, allowing them to penetrate into pores and dissolve excess sebum and debris.

How BHAs Work

BHAs exfoliate both the skin surface and inside pores by breaking down oil buildup and dead skin cells. They also possess anti-inflammatory properties.

BHAs are usually preferred for oily and acne-prone skin.

Types of Chemical Peels

  • Superficial peels – mild exfoliation with minimal downtime

  • Medium peels – deeper action for pigmentation and wrinkles

  • Deep peels – intensive treatment for severe skin damage

Possible Side Effects

  • Redness and irritation

  • Peeling and dryness

  • Burning sensation

  • Increased sun sensitivity

  • Hyperpigmentation if improperly used or overused

Important Aftercare

  • Daily sunscreen use is essential

  • Avoid harsh scrubs and over-exfoliation

  • Keep the skin moisturized

  • Avoid direct sun exposure during healing

When used appropriately, chemical peels can support skin renewal and improve overall skin appearance, but selecting the right peel depends on skin type and concerns.

Very informative. Well explained.

I have never used a chemical peel before. This was informative.I prefer using natural fruit peels because those give good results because of natural ingredients.I have seen people getting extreme irritation on skin, itching and skin burn after using chemical peels. Some even developed severe allergies.

Very informative post. Chemical peels can be really effective when chosen according to skin type and used properly, but I think many people underestimate the importance of aftercare and sunscreen in maintaining healthy skin.
