Polygraph tests, better known as lie detector tests, have always fascinated people. Many imagine them as machines capable of directly identifying whether someone is telling the truth, but in reality, a polygraph measures physiological changes that may be associated with stress or emotional arousal.
During the test, sensors are attached to monitor breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, and skin conductivity caused by sweating. The process begins with a pretest interview, where the examiner asks simple questions to establish baseline readings such as a person’s name or age, to help observe how the body reacts while telling the truth. The examiner then moves to the core questions related to the incident being investigated and compares the physiological responses to the earlier baseline readings. Significant spikes are interpreted as possible indicators of deception.
However, this raises an important question: does stress always mean someone is lying? An innocent person may still panic because they feel intimidated, anxious, or afraid of being falsely accused. At the same time, a practiced manipulator may remain calm enough to avoid obvious physiological changes. Human emotions are incredibly complex, and fear, trauma, embarrassment, guilt, and anxiety can all produce very similar bodily reactions. This is one of the main reasons why the scientific validity and reliability of polygraph testing continue to be heavily debated, and why the findings are considered inadmissible in many court proceedings around the world.
