Book Ban in Kashmir: Is It A Blow to Free Thought or National Security?

In a recent and extremely controversial step, the government of Jammu & Kashmir has prohibited 25 books written by prominent authors and scholars like Arundhati Roy, Sumantra Bose, and Christopher Snedden, citing that these books propagate secessionist thoughts and are a threat to India’s sovereignty.

The books, several of which discuss Kashmir’s political past and identity, are now banned under national security provisions. Raids have already commenced across Srinagar’s bookshops, setting alarm bells ringing for academics, students, and civil society. Authors and intellectuals are labeling this a frontal assault on freedom of expression and academic freedom, cautioning that such prohibitions eliminate critical viewpoints from the public space. At the same time, Delhi University has apparently removed important readings on Hindu nationalism and tribal identity from its syllabus, and NCERT textbooks are still being ideologically revised. Is protecting national unity worth sacrificing academic freedom?

Give your thoughts:

Should governments get to decide what people can read?

Is this a matter of controlling the narrative or saving national integrity?

It’s a threat to freedom of thoughts and speech in our sovereign nation. Government should take a stand and lift the ban on the book

Banning books feels like blocking free thought and academic growth. Students need access to different views to understand history and politics better. If something is controversial, it should be discussed—not hidden. National security is important, but so is freedom to learn and question.

As a democratic country, govt doesn’t have any rights to limit freedom of speech, expression, media. Every citizen has the right to read books fitting their ideologies.

Banning of literary works and publishing incomplete historical events in NCERTS – aims to manipulate people befitting their agenda.
