Blue Biotechnology and the Sustainable Blue Economy

Blue biotechnology is a term used to describe the use of biotechnology on marine and aquatic resources to develop these resources sustainably. It is a fundamental ingredient of the blue economy whose goal is to use the ocean resources sustainably without destroying the marine ecosystems.

With the help of blue biotechnology, marine organisms are exploited to produce pharmaceuticals, functional foods, cosmetics, biofuels,s and industrial enzymes. The aquaculture biotechnology, sustainable harvesting, and marine bio-processing are the measures that sustainability in economic growth is not at the expense of the loss of biodiversity.

The innovations in biotechnology are also helpful in the mitigation of climate change since they promote carbon capture (by growing algae) and decrease reliance on fossil fuels. To create a balance between innovation and environmental protection, policy integration, ethical bioprospecting, and conservation strategies are needed. Blue biotechnology is therefore able to sustain economic stability in the long run and also preserve ocean health.
