Barbara Fredrickson's Theory: How does a Positive Mindset Influence Our Perception?

A positive mindset is often associated with happiness and empathy, but it extends beyond these qualities. It also involves accepting situations as they are, making emotional peace with failure, and to be understanding in a way that circumstances do not negatively impact one’s inner state.

However, can a positive mindset fundamentally alter the way we perceive everything? The answer is yes, not only from a personal perspective but also from a scientific standpoint.

What does this ā€œscientific lensā€ mean?

According to an American Psychologist, Barbara Fredrickson, her ā€˜Broaden-and-Build Theory’ shows us that positive emotions such as joy, gratitude and love improve our overall well-being. These emotions broaden our range of thinking, expand our possibilities and help build psychological resilience over time. In contrast, a negative mindset tends narrows our focus, limiting our ability to think clearly and repsond effectively in various situations.

Let’s understand this with an example.

When a child is encouraged to explore the world, they gradually develop social skills by interacting with their friends. They become emotionally capable by learning empathy, compassion and understanding. At the same time, they grow physically engaged by actively perceiving and responding to their environment. This positive approach to parenting significantly enhances a child’s overall well-being.

Whereas, in a negative environment, when the child is not allowed to freely express themselves or explore, their growth becomes restricted. Such children may feel confined and often lack fundamental social, physical and emotional skills needed to understand their environment and maintain their well-being.

Therefore, a positive mindset shapes our perception, altering the way we view things and enhances our life through a more optimistic lens. It is essential to maintain a healthy and positive outlook, even during challenging times. Ultimately our approach to obstacles can significantly influence the outcomes we experience.
